Most samaj and community organisations in India still run on a printed directory that is out of date the day it is published, a few overloaded WhatsApp groups, and an Excel file maintained by one dedicated volunteer. - Gotra, sub-community or mandal fields where relevant, configurable per community rather than hard-coded.

- Fast search and filters: by name, city, native place, profession, blood group and age range. Search must work well in both English and Gujarati, Hindi or Marathi spellings.
2. Privacy controls — non-negotiable
A directory is only trusted if members control what others can see. This matters more than any feature, and it also matters legally under India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act.
- Per-field visibility for phone numbers, addresses and dates of birth (everyone, only committee, only me).
- Separate visibility rules for women and minors, with sensible defaults that hide contact details.
- Access only for approved members — new registrations verified by an admin.
- No bulk export of member data for regular users, and screenshot restrictions where the platform allows.
- Consent capture at registration, and a clear way for a member to request deletion.
Key tip: Default to privacy. It is much easier to let members choose to show their phone number than to recover trust after a directory leaks to telemarketers.
3. News, events and obituaries
Content keeps people opening the app after they have found the contacts they needed.
- News and announcements from the central committee and city units, with images and PDF attachments.
- Events with date, venue, map link, RSVP and optional paid registration for functions, sammelan and trips.
- Obituaries (besnu / shraddhanjali) posted quickly with prayer-meet details. This is often the single most time-sensitive notification a samaj sends, and it should be handled with a respectful, simple layout.
- Congratulations and achievements — exam results, awards, new businesses.
- Photo galleries for events.
4. Matrimony and biodata
For many communities, matrimony is the reason families register. A basic version includes a biodata builder, photo upload, filters by age, education, city and native place, and interest requests. Key considerations:
- Profiles visible only to verified members, and optionally only to families with an active profile.
- Parents or guardians able to manage profiles on behalf of candidates.
- Contact details shared only after mutual interest, or through a committee member.
- Auto-hide profiles once marked "engaged".
5. Admin roles per city and unit
Large samaj organisations are federated: a central body, regional or city units, and sometimes youth and mahila wings. The admin system should reflect that.

6. Push notifications that respect attention
Push notifications replace the "please forward to all groups" message. Segment them by city, age group, gender or wing so a Mumbai youth event does not ping seniors in Surat. Limit who can send app-wide notifications, and keep obituaries and urgent notices clearly distinct from general news.
7. Importing existing data from Excel
Almost every samaj already has member data in spreadsheets, sometimes thousands of rows compiled over decades. A proper import tool saves months of manual entry:
- Map spreadsheet columns to app fields, including family grouping by a family ID or head-of-family column.
- Detect duplicates by phone number, and flag missing or invalid values before import.
- Invite imported members by SMS or WhatsApp to claim and verify their profile.

OTP login by mobile number is the simplest for older members, but SMS costs add up, so consider WhatsApp or email OTP as alternatives. Store photos in cloud object storage with automatic resizing, because family and event galleries grow quickly. Choose a cross-platform framework so Android and iOS share one codebase, and keep the admin panel on the web. Finally, make sure the developer accounts, server and domain are registered in the samaj's name, not a volunteer's or vendor's, so control never depends on one person.
Launching successfully in a community
The technology is the easy part; adoption is the work. Launch at a large community event with a help desk to install the app and register families on the spot. Appoint volunteers in each city to handle approvals. Post obituaries and important notices in the app first so members learn to check it. And keep the WhatsApp groups for a transition period, pointing them to the app rather than shutting them down abruptly.
